According to reports, polyethylene or plastic bags do not decompose in natural conditions for 100 to 200 years. It has been found that 35% of marine animals in the Pacific Ocean have microplastic particles in their stomachs. Pollution of water and soil with plastic waste has become a global issue today. To raise public awareness about this problem, July 3 is observed annually as the International Plastic Bag Free Day.
